Texts for Cultural Criticism

Hi everyone,

I thought tomorrow we could take a look at a few texts through a cultural lens. I will bring in two magazine ads, then if we have time we can discuss the explosion of sexually charged youtube music videos that support a political candidate. You all know about Obama girl, I’m sure. Check out a faceoff of girl groups.

I’m looking forward to it too, Allison. Great examples. Cultural Studies takes in so many different fields. The wikipedia entry for Cultural Studies is a good one for helping all of us prepare for that discussion on the 13th.

I have read Cultural Studies by Ziauddin Sardar and Borin Van Loon. It’s an easy- reading book with cartoon-like pictures and different perspectives of some influential critics talking about each topic. One of the definitions they give for culture is “culture is simply the ensemble of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.” And Cultural studies functions by borrowing freely from social science disciplines and all branches of humanities and the arts. I think this book is kind of like Tyson’s theory book in which both books interpret difficult ideas with simple language and easy examples. Actually, both books can be used in high school for theory study. Posted by L. L.
